In 1968, the electrifying potion of musical greats Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham exploded onto the rock scene as Led Zeppelin. Their palpable, walloping beats in combination with their extraordinarily lyrical atmospherics quickly transcended the boundaries of traditional music to earn them the moniker "Gods of Rock." In Led Zeppelin: Shadow Taller Than Our Souls, Charles R. Cross looks past the over-told saga of Zeppelin's offstage antics to reexamine the reasons why the band garnered millions of screaming fans in the first placethe exquisite depth of their music. In an unprecedented format filled with interactive, historic memorabilia, this charged piece of rock criticism surveys Zeppelin's entire career, explores their landmark contributions, album by album, and displays stunning photographs and significant ephemera.

New Take on an Old Subject November 5, 2009 M. Jourard (Kirkland, WA United States) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
Charles Cross knows his subject and is a good writer. The "interactive" stuff in this book (posters, programs, press releases) isn't too impressive, but the writing is very informative. Cross focuses on the history of the band and their contentious relationship with the press, but more importantly, their songs. These guys made great records! Page is revealed as the mastermind of the band from the beginning, and a consummate producer;we learn that he was a top session guitarist in the UK, and that John Paul Jones was also a seasoned pro as an arranger, bassist and producer of such acts as Herman's Hermits well before he hooked up with Page. It was Bonham and Plant who were the virtual unknowns. This book takes us through each album and gives you an insight into how they made each album and what was going on in their personal lives and their career at the time. Excellent insight into this amazing band whose best recordings have yet to be topped.
